Winter Games NZ boosts local snow sports infrastructure

15 Jul 2008 - Winter Games NZ has invested over $140,000 in infrastructure for the event that is to be made available for use by all ski fields in the region.

Winter Games NZ has invested over $140,000 in infrastructure for the event that is to be made available for use by all ski fields in the region. The Super G, to be held at Coronet Peak at next year's WGNZ, requires over 3.2km of 'B' safety netting and 50m of 'A' safety netting, both of which have to be imported from France. The 'B' netting is used to decelerate racers should they fall at high speed and the 'A' netting is used at key points behind the 'B' netting buffer to stop racers to a standstill. "Winter Games NZ has purchased this equipment on behalf of the region so it is available for any of the ski fields to use," said Arthur Klap, Winter Games NZ CEO. "Having this kind of infrastructure readily available makes hosting more large international events even more feasible for the region." Local Wanaka upholsterer, Daniel Batchelor will provide the WGNZ with 53 giant crash mats, beating large-scale manufacturers from Europe and the USA to the job. "This is another example of how WGNZ will benefit the local community," said Klap. "It's a policy of WGNZ that we will give preference to working with local businesses as long as they are price competitive." "This period is usually a quieter time for me so it is fantastic to pick up a job for this period," said Daniel Batchelor. "It is also great to see that the event organisers are recognising that Wanaka's local suppliers can provide excellent service in a range of industries within the local area for the event which will lend itself to reducing the overall carbon footprint of the event as well as showcasing the range of services and skills available in the Wanaka/Queenstown regions." Another initiative being instigated by Winter Games NZ is the training of a local team in the safety aspects of high-level speed skiing events. WGNZ will bring over a safety specialist from Canadian resort, Lake Louise, to undertake the training. The presence of such expertise in the region will also add to the attractiveness of the Southern Lakes as a venue for top international snow events in the future. Winter Games NZ will take place at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Snow Farm, Naseby and Dunedin from August 28 to September 6 next year and will feature disciplines of alpine skiing, free skiing, x-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating and adaptive snow sports.
