NAME:
Actually this is more complicated that it might seem at first glance. My legal
name is Herbert Richard Schulze, but no one who knows me ever addresses me as
“Herb†or “Herbertâ€. My nickname, which derives from my middle name, is “Dickâ€. So please list me either as
Herbert R (“Dickâ€) Schulze or better yet, just as Dick Schulze.
AGE: 60

WHAT SKI'S OR BOARD'S DO YOU RIDE ON?
Skis: Nordica SUV-12X with Marker
bindings and Nordica boots. Snowboards: Inca 159 (soft) for
freestyle and 163 (stiff) for boardercross, with Salomon bindings and Burton
Sabath boots. Volkl 178 Renn tiger for GS, with Deeluxe hard-shell boots.
WHERE DO YOU SPEND YOUR WINTERS? NZ winter's I spend in Wanaka as much
as possible. North American winters I spend at Lake Tahoe, California as much
as possible, except when I am in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado or Utah. The
majority of the time, year round, I am at work in Silicon Valley. WHAT IS YOUR BEST SKIING STORY? Well, after 8 passionate years of
snowboarding I have heaps of stories. I could carry on for hours! By which time
my audience would be sound asleep. One of my best short ones comes from my
first-ever boardercross race in NZ, in the 2000 Nationals at Coronet Peak. I was in the start gate between
two expert boardercross racers, both less than half my age. Spy Dunbar came up
to me, looked over the competition on either side of me, and said, “Dick, I
don’t envy you your position!†But right after the start I was #2
and would have come in first or second had it not been for a nasty spine that I
crashed on half way down the race course. Sigh…
LIST 5 ITEMS YOU THINK SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE WORLD:
1. Skiers
who don't like snowboarders 2. Snowboarders
who don't like skiers 3. Ski
resorts that don't allow snowboarding 4. Any
place that doesn't allow skateboarding 5. That's
enough.
WHAT IS YOU FAVOURITE ITEM OF FOOD? Homemade mince meat pie WHAT WOULD YOU BE IF YOU WERE NOT A SKIER OR BOARDER? Well, before I ever started boarding
I was a solicitor, and a grandparent, and a motorcyclist, and a pilot. I am
sure I would still be all those things even if I had never become a
snowboarder. And even before I started skiing I was all those things except
grandparent, and I suspect I would have become a grandparent whether I ever
skied or not.
TO ME, BASE IS: The first place I go when I return
to NZ each winter; Part of my identity as a
snowboarder; An integral part of my Wanaka home.
WHAT WOULD YOUR BEST DAY ON SNOW BE? In deep powder on a double-black
slope in the trees with my friends.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVMENT? Finishing my first marathon race
(42.2 km) on a chilly San Francisco morning.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER ONLINE PROFILES? There is a profile of me on
Robett’s web site. And check out my personal web site www.snappysports.com.
HOW WAS YOUR SEASON? GIVE ME A BRIEF RUN DOWN ON WHAT YOU GOT UP TO? In July, sat the NZSIA CSI exam. In
August, competed in the South Island Regionals at Mt Hutt (Masters division).
In September, competed in the Nationals at The Remarks, and in the Cardrona
Coca-Cola Games (both open class). Then sat the NZSIA Stage One exam.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR SEASON? Passing the CSI exam (Certificate of
Snowboard Instruction) and getting my NZ snowboard instructor license.
DESCRIBE YOUR BEST DAY OF THE SEASON? The pipe at Mt Hutt where I had the
best run I have ever had in a pipe competition. And the slopestyle in the
Cardrona Games when I aired the staircase.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORST DAY OF THE SEASON? The slopestyle in the Nationals when
the weather and snow were so horrible that I could not do much of anything
right.
PLEASE LIST ANY RESULTS: In the Regionals, came in fifth in
GS and BX and first in pipe and slopestyle in the Masters Division.
PLAN FOR THE SUMMER? (WHERE YOU GOING AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?) At the moment I am at work in Silicon Valley. I will be a weekend instructor at
Northstar-at-Tahoe again this winter, starting late November, and I will be
competing in the USASA competitions (South Tahoe series) starting in January. I
am on the wait list for the Grand Prix at Breckenridge in December.
SHOUTOUTS: To the gang at Base and the gang at
Snowpark and Frosty, and especially to my coaches in the NZSIA who are
absolutely the world's best.
