Dynastar Big Trouble Skis 2009 - Reviews

A very versatile mix of flotation and stability

Dynastar Big Trouble

Summary: Was persuaded to hike to the summit of Treble Cone after grabbing these skis, and they were perfect for the task. A very versatile mix of flotation and stability without too much of a price in terms of manoeuvrability. Definitely not just for park use.

Me: Closer to 40 than 30, 30+ years skiing, 85+kg and
187 cm. Advanced enough to ski pretty much anything, although not always gracefully.

Preference: challenging myself with a combination of steep and deep and searching out stashes when the weather gods haven't been kind for a while -- 20 piste, 80 off.

Technique: old school -- if I ride switch, it isn't planned.

Conditions: Recent but chopped up boot-top-depth powder, of varying weight. Not a lot of ice about to test edge grip.

Skied: 186 (perfect)

Ski Strengths: Excelled both on the hike up to the summit of Treble Cone (light enough for lengthy climbs)
and on the way down -- a joy to ski in relatively untracked powder. Also substantial enough to bust through the more chopped up snow after we rejoined lift-accessed terrain. Surprisingly nimble when needed and solid when let run on groomers.

Ski Weaknesses: probably not as good on as off piste but then this ski is designed for the back country/park.

Big Trouble gives good grip all over the mountain

Dynastar I feel have brought their piste orientated background to the back country with the Big Trouble. The stiffness of the Dynastar Big Trouble allows it to hold an edge at speed on trail like nobodies business, that can be pushed to the limit when desired. The dimensions and greatly raised tip and tail means the Dynastar Big Trouble is in its element in fresh snow. But beware the Big Trouble is very grunty so not for so hot for the faint hearted, cruisy skier.
